Insuring a household employee

Private households are also required to take out pension insurance for their employees such as carpenters, decorators or cleaners, if they are acting as employers.

A household is obligated to take out an insurance contract or act as a temporary employer depending on the terms of the employment contract and the level of the wages paid.

An employer is obliged to take out an insurance contract, if he/she has

  • at least one permanent employee or
  • temporary employees whose six-month payroll amounts to more than 7,386 euro.

A household acts as a temporary employer if

  • it has no permanent employees and
  • the payroll of six consecutive months is less than 7,386 euro.
