The transmission system operator Fingrid developed a voluntary power system support procedure. Ilmarinen is taking part. If the procedure is activated, it may have a momentary impact on properties’ conditions.

The power system support procedure of the transmission system operator Fingrid is intended for using the flexibility potential found outside the balancing power market. The goal is to reduce power outages in the winter of 2022–2023.

As a responsible operator, we at Ilmarinen are involved in ensuring that homes, businesses and facilities have enough electricity. We own approximately 130 properties: residential properties, office buildings and warehouses.

What’s it all about?

Fingrid has a three-tier procedure in place for a possible electricity shortage, which describes the severity of the situation:

  1. electricity shortage possible
  2. high risk of electricity shortage
  3. electricity shortage

The power system support procedure will be adopted if we reach phase two, i.e. a high risk of electricity shortage. This would be the case if all of the available up-regulating bids of the balancing power market had been used and no additional electricity would be available in neighbouring countries either. The power system support procedure would therefore help to secure the electricity supply.

How does the procedure impact Ilmarinen’s tenants?

If the power system support procedure is activated, Fingrid will inform Ilmarinen. After the notification, we will immediately begin to ration electricity consumption. If the procedure is adopted, we will immediately inform the property’s representative (account manager, real estate manager, service manager or technical manager). They will inform the tenants.

During the procedure, buildings’ ventilation will be limited or turned off entirely for a certain period. This may momentarily affect the air quality in a property’s premises.

We also hope that the tenants will try to save energy independently.
