What does an extended payment time mean for my YEL contribution?

When you move the payment to a later date:

  • Late-payment interest is charged from the original due date until the new payment date
  • You can pay the invoice in smaller amounts before the new due date
  • Any amount paid after the original due date accrues late-payment interest
  • The late-payment interest rate is 10.5% for the period 1 Jan–31 Dec 2026, in accordance with the Interest Act
  • Always use the reference number on the invoice so the payment is allocated correctly

The change does not affect invoices that have already been sent.

What if I don’t pay my YEL contribution?

If a YEL invoice remains unpaid:

  • It is transferred to debt collection after a reminder
  • Ultimately, collection may involve enforcement

Contributions expire after five years, but expired contributions:

  • Reduce your pension
  • Lower your YEL earned income for that year in proportion to the unpaid amount

FAQ

  1. Not always. It’s best to apply before the due date.

If the invoice is already overdue, you may not be able to apply on your own in the online service, and a paid reminder may be sent. In that case, contact us as soon as possible.

  2. Paying your YEL contribution in one instalment in January is the most affordable option. You receive an interest credit. If payments are weighted toward the end of the year, interest is added.

  3. Yes, if your situation changes.

You can change instalments in the online service under Change instalment months, as long as the changes comply with the insurance terms: at least half of the payments must fall due before August.

  4. An extension does not reduce your pension. Unpaid and expired YEL contributions do reduce your pension, because your YEL earned income for that year is lowered in proportion to the unpaid amount.
