If you are dissatisfied with your decision

Ilmarinen’s decisions are based on earnings-related pension legislation. If you cannot be granted a pension or rehabilitation, you will receive a negative decision from us. The decision states the grounds for refusal. If you are not satisfied with the decision you received from us, you can seek to have it changed.

You can appeal the decision

If you are dissatisfied with the decision you have received, you may appeal against it within 30 days from when you were informed of the decision. Address your appeal to the Pension Appeal Board (Työeläkeasioiden muutoksenhakulautakunta TELK), but send it to Ilmarinen. TELK is an appeal instance that functions independently of the pension providers and the Finnish Centre for Pensions. If we accept your requested changes, we will rectify our decision ourselves.

Please note that if you have received a temporary decision, you cannot appeal that. You can appeal only after the final decision.

How to file an appeal

Send your appeal to us by logging in to Ilmarinen’s MyPension service and selecting “Lähetä viesti” (i.e. “Send a message”). An appeal sent through the online service after logging in does not require a signature. However, the Pension Appeal Board may, if necessary, request that you sign the appeal.

The appeal must specify:

  • that it is addressed to the Pension Appeal Board
  • the decision that you are appealing
  • the changes you demand
  • the grounds for your appeal
  • your name, personal identity code, address and phone number
  • the deceased’s name and identity number if the appeal concerns survivors’ pension

Also include any documentation that you refer to. You can send documents through the MyPension service as an attachment to a message. You can send additional documents through the MyPension service throughout the appeal process. Any documents that you have previously sent to Ilmarinen do not need to be sent again.

Alternatively, you can send the appeal to Ilmarinen by post to the address Ilmarinen Mutual Pension Insurance Company, Appeal, P.O. Box 1, FI-00018 ILMARINEN. If you send the appeal by post, it must be signed. If someone else has lodged the appeal for you, authorise that person to take care of the matter on your behalf in a free-form power of attorney that includes your signature.

Appeal period

The appeal must be received by Ilmarinen at the latest on the thirtieth (30th) day from when you were informed of the decision. We will consider you to have been informed of the decision on the seventh (7th) day after the date when the decision was posted, unless something else arises.

Transfer of the appeal to the Pension Appeal Board

If we cannot rectify the decision according to your request, we will transfer your appeal and any documents related to your matter to TELK for deliberation. We will inform you of the transfer.
